There are so many amazing Vietnam tourist attractions and it can be hard to decide what to do and where to go. We tried a fair few experiences all over Vietnam. We missed out on just as many and hope to go back and do soon.
With so many awesome places to see and go, how do you know which are the best Vietnam tourist spots to plan for? How do you know which Vietnam destinations to add to the itinerary or even what to see in Vietnam?
While we haven’t seen everything, we’re happy to tell you about the awesome things we did experience and perhaps why we think you should add them to your trip.
We can give you a million different reasons to go anywhere in Vietnam. But to help you plan the best experience, you’ll need to think about what you want from your trip.
Looking for something out of the ordinary?
How about a coffee on Hanoi Train Street? Sounds boring and over exposed but it is actually a unique experience. Let’s be honest too. It’s one of few places in the world where you can actually sit mere millimeters away from an active rail line while sipping your coffee.
Maybe you’d prefer strolling through a colorful labyrinth exploring the region’s history and traditions through stories depicted on the walls of local residences?
Hint: It’s a great way to meet and support locals that are passionate about their culture.
Imagine climbing a dragon’s back, followed by a lazy float down the picturesque Tam Coc river. What could be better than soaking up the sights of verdant rice paddies surrounded by rock formations as old as time?
Perhaps you’d prefer a glass of red as you sail through one of the most famous UNESCO sites in the world, Ha Long Bay? The possibilities are endless!
Did you know Vietnam once had royalty? True story and one we least expected to learn from the ruins of the once spectacular Imperial Palace in Hue. What remains of the old Citadel will have you in awe of a grand era very few people knew Vietnam experienced.
Imagine touching a gate built in the mid-17th century. Part of a wall that is still standing today because a white horse told an emperor where to build an indestructible perimeter around his citadel. Vietnamese legends will leave you speechless as will her remarkable history.
If you enjoyed the suggestions above then you’ll love the next few. Some you may have heard of and others not so much.
This beautiful little town has grown into somewhat of a destination superstar in central Vietnam.
Hoi An was originally a trading town and dates back to the 15th century. A lot of effort has gone into preserving as much of its authenticity as possible. Today, visitors can still enjoy all the sights and sounds of traders and vendors making a living. Experience everything from great shopping to mouth watering food and beverages.
The fun doesn’t stop there either. Hoi An sports two of the best beaches in Vietnam, An Bang and Cua Dai. Or if the beach isn’t your thing, then enjoy a river cruise along the Thu Bon River.
One of the things we love most about Hoi An is its awesome night market. There you’ll find some of the best street food on offer as well as some great souvenirs to take home with you.
Okay, so it’s not a mountain made out of actual marble. But you have to admit that when a local tells you about the legend of the dragon that laid and egg that became five mountains, it’s worth a visit. Right?
It was fun to walk in, under, over and around all the caves and formations. The view across My Khe beach from the highest point is epic too. Oh, and how many mountains do you know that has an elevator? Yup, you read that right, an elevator.
Da Nang has another famous superstar in her midst. At the foot of the Son Tra Peninsula stands a 70+ meter tall figure gracefully guarding the city and her inhabitants as she has done for hundreds of years.
Everyone knows how awesome the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is. Not to mention its most famous attraction, the Hang Son Doong cave.
What you don’t know until you look into it a bit more, is the astronomical cost required to visit it. Nor what is involved in preparing to visit this cave (along with special insurance, a personal guide, special equipment, etc.).
We didn’t have time for all that and we’re pretty sure you might not either. Before you panic, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the cave experience all together (wink-wink).
And if you think you’ve seen one cave, you’ve seen them all, then think again.
We visited two of the three main caves in the Phong Nha system, namely Paradise Cave and Dark Cave. Both experiences were amazing! They were nothing like each other either, which is why they are perfect for visiting on the same day!
We’ve seen far more of Vietnam than what we’ve just told you about. Be sure to keep your peepers peeled on this page as we’ll update it with more experiences!
We can tell you without a doubt that the most unique and memorable thing we did in Vietnam was to explore this country on the back of two motorcycles. We didn’t do it for two weeks either. We loved every moment of our six month long motorcycle adventure.
Why you ask? Well, why not?? The best part about it was that we were able to create our own diy tour of Vietnam. We added the things we wanted to see, stayed longer where we found more things to explore or left when we didn’t feel inspired.
That kind of ‘freedom travel’ is a once in a lifetime experience and we love that we were able to do it. Vietnam is changing fast and we’re sure our next visit will be a completely different experience again.
If this sounds like something you’re keen on, we can tell you all the things you’ll need to know about planning your motorcycle trip in Vietnam as well as all the amazing places we got to see on our adventure.
Well, if you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading all about our epic adventures. Without you, we’d have no one to share with and we love sharing with our Tribe.
